Goal of Tournament: To raise funds in order to help provide support to the Joan Katz Breast Center as it guides patients from the point of diagnosis into survivorship. Programs provided include: patient navigation, one-on-one teaching, genetic counseling and testing, and support groups. Services are available to patients/survivors and their care takers. All programming provided is funded by generous donors and foundations.
BoomerJack’s Support to the Joan Katz Breast Center: Since opening its doors nine years ago, BoomerJack’s commitment to the Joan Katz Breast Center has enabled over 7,000 patients and family members to navigate the journey through cancer, one step at a time, free of charge. The Center gives patients a place to get free non-medical services, education and support - regardless of where they choose to receive their treatment, their geographic location, or their ability to pay for services. Recently re-certified with the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, the Center is poised to serve another 5,000 with our continued support of this lifesaving mission!
BoomerJack’s has raised and donated over $385,000 to the Joan Katz Breast Center through their annual Golf Tournament. This year will mark BoomerJack’s 13th anniversary for their Tee Off Fore Tata’s Tournament. All proceeds from this event go directly to the Joan Katz Breast Center.
Joan Katz
After battling cancer three times, Joan Katz, a Fort Worth resident and philanthropist, wanted a better way for people to make their way through the maze of doctors, hospitals and paperwork.
Working with Dr. Alan Johns, her gynecologist and a fellow breast cancer survivor, the two set the groundwork to create a unique center in the Tarrant County community. According to the 360 Magazine, “Katz and Johns talked to numerous breast cancer survivors to figure out exactly what was needed, and they drew upon their own experience.” Their collaboration began over a cup of coffee eight years ago.
The result? A comprehensive breast service on the Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth campus that opened in April 2010 for those diagnosed with breast cancer in Tarrant County and surrounding areas. The Joan Katz Breast Center (JKBC) is a 5,400-square-foot ‘center without walls’ that brings together nurse navigation, breast screenings, diagnosis, treatment, tumor conferences, counseling, social support and breast wellness and education.
Fast-forward five years, and Katz still stays at the forefront. She led the JKBC’s fifth anniversary celebration on April 16 to an enthusiastic gathering on patients and former patients, clinical staff and community members. More than 5,000 people have visited the center in its first five years. “I know the power of hands,” remarked Katz at the celebration. “A cast of 1,000 hands made the vision of this center a reality.”
